Bald is Beautiful is a two volume set (that may be purchased individually) - one for kids, the other for their parents - designed to help pediatric cancer patients and their families and friends get through the unknown and treacherous waters in which they suddenly find themselves. Underwritten by the Shining Stars Foundation, a nonprofit that provides sport, recreational, and outreach programs for children with cancer and other life threatening diseases, the books contain heartfelt interviews full of advice and anecdotes from a number of the Shining Stars and their families. The interviews are combined with information about medical tests and procedures and their potential side effects, along with definitions and explanations of what to expect as a patient, stunning photos of some of the Shining Stars that were taken by a professional photographer whose work has appeared in National Geographic and a "yellow pages" of resources for pediatric cancer patients. Additionally, there are blank sheets throughout the books in which the child or parent is encouraged to write their feelings, insert photos, and keep organized records of important information they should take with them to doctors appointments.
These books are the brainchild of a group of dedicated children with cancer and their parents who recognized the need for a personalized, insightful and knowledgeable firsthand perspective about how to most sanely navigate each step of the process of living with childhood cancer from the initial diagnosis to being declared "cancer free."
